High School Team

Youth between 9th and 12th grade can participate in the high school program. Coaches work with rowers to help them continue to build physical fitness, mental strength, team skills, independence, confidence, and life skills. Practice sessions focus on multi-rower team boats and have a moderate coach-to-rower ratio. Competition plays a larger focus on the team and while not required, everyone is encouraged to compete.

Summer (new rowers)
Many new rowers and coxswains start in Learn to Row Summer Camps. Athletes in these camps are introduced to the sport of rowing and teamwork. One of the camps offers the opportunity to race at a regatta in Seattle.

Fall
The fall season starts in late-August and runs for 10 weeks with practices 5 days/week. Practices are on water with 3-4 weekend competitions throughout the season. Competitions are “head races” where crews set off one after another and are timed over the 5k course.

Winter
The winter season starts in mid-November and runs through the end of January. It is primarily land-based at a local gym – working on conditioning, functional movement, and flexibility, as well as rowing on indoor rowing machines (aka: ergs).

Spring
The spring season starts in April and runs through mid-May with practices 5 days/week. Practices are on water with 7-8 weekend competitions throughout the season. Some competitions are day-trips, with the potential for 2-day racing in Eugene, OR and 3-day USRowing Northwest Youth Championships (aka: “Regionals”). Competitions are “sprint races” where crews start side-by-side over a 2k course.

Summer (experienced rowers)
Completing the cycle, returning, experienced rowers, can row over the summer. With the heavier competitive spring/fall seasons being complete, the focus is more on technical development and having fun!
