Learn to Row: The Basic Sculling Class

Basic Sculling Class - 2010 Series

Interested in learning basic sculling techniques and skills? Would you like to experience rowing on the Puget Sound? If so, sign up for one of OAR's Basic Sculling Class sessions! We'll provide you with the skills, knowledge, and practice you need to have a safe and fun experience on the water! Click here  to print program flyer.

Class participants learn to row in MAAS Aero rowing shells (one rower, two oars). In sculling, each rower uses two oars.  In sweep rowing, each rower has one oar.

Class Size
  • Class numbers are limited to 6 participants per session to ensure positive, productive, and empowering experiences for all!
  • Spots are reserved on a first come, first served basis once we have received your registration forms and payment. Classes fill up quickly.
Cost
  • $150 for non-OAR members, $50 for OAR members.
    If you choose to join the club upon completion of the class, $50 of the class fee may be applied toward OAR's $350 annual membership ($530 family membership).

  • To register: complete and send in forms listed in registration instructions below .
Please NOTE:
  • If you are a beginning rower interested in joining OAR, the Basic Sculling Class is a prerequisite to use OAR sculling boats.
Sculling Class Registration

Registration is required: Classes fill quickly.

Complete the following three forms which are available to download by clicking on the links below:
1. Sculling Class Application. (Indicate a first and second choice for session number.)
2. Masters Information Sheet
3. OAR WaiverOAR Waiver
If you are not a member of the Valley Athletic Club, please also complete:
4. Valley AC Guest waiver

Mail the completed forms along with a check for class fee of $150 ($50 for member) payable to “OAR” to:

Upon receipt of your application and payment, we will contact you to confirm your spot in class or check with you about an alternative session if your first choice is filled.
Basic Sculling Class: Course Outline
Day 1: Evening Session - 6:30 p.m. - 9:45 p.m. (Friday)
Location: The Olympia Area Rowing Boathouse - Swantown Marina
Content:
  • Introduction to OAR
  • Introduction to rowing theory, nomenclature and equipment.
  • Rowing safety including technique practice on rowing ergometer and boat flip test.
  • Demonstrate ability to swim.
Day 2: Morning Session - 9:30 a.m - 12:30 p.m. (Saturday)
Location: Swantown Marina, OAR boathouse and dock
Content:
  • Rowing technique practice on land.
  • Rowing technique practice on the water (in single and/or double boats)
  • Continual practice with safety precautions.
  • Introduction, modeling, and practicing of rowing technique drills and workouts for beginners. 
  • Final session will include and informal "test" to ensure you are prepared to begin rowing safely on your own.
Days 3 & 4: Evening Sessions - beginning at 6:00pm (Monday & Wednesday)
Location: Swantown Marina, OAR boathouse and dock
Content:
  • Continuation from Day 2

Boat Check Out Information:  Experienced rowers must complete a brief check-out with an OAR Board Member to be eligible for OAR Club Boat use.
